What is the Open Roleplay Plot?
Magic, its history and its limits
Magic, its history and its limits
Magic was discovered just a hundred years ago in 2020, thanks to the massive increase in technological breakthroughs. Oscilla isn't the forefront of this talent, but it certainly has jumped on the band wagon with the world to use magic for convenience purposes. Technology has allowed humans to harness this new energy into gadgets and machines that manipulate physics in our favor.
This new magic isn't without its consequences, however. Like anything, faulty equipment can cause an outbreak of energy, cause the opposite of the desired reaction, or harm the user--which is why the people of Glenmont have voted to ban magic. For the past twenty years, it has been the only city in Oscilla to do without the magic machines, and they've been perfectly happy without them.
Silverhill, rich and sparkling and beautiful, holds the largest market for the magic machines due to its economic stability. Employment is hard to find, but once you're in, it's even harder to get out. Due to its mass amounts of resources, it assists in Ashwick's crime problems (or at least appears to).
Ashwick is the poorest of the three cities inside Oscilla. After attempting to compete with Silverhill for the largest magic machine market, it failed miserably and its economy crumbled. The rent is too high for the pay and citizens often have to commute to get a decent job. It controls a lot of the Black Market, which runs right under the noses of the Government in Silverhill. In conjunction with Silverhill's criminals, anyone can get their hands on rejected magic machines.
While this technology is wonderful, it still has its limits. Scientists have only been able to harness the following abilities:
- Any of Earth's natural energy can be converted to any of our natural elements. (Ex: air can be turned into water.)
- It is possible to manipulate the gravity of small areas, allowing levitation of things no larger than 200 pounds (91 kilos).
- Non-organic materials (such as steel) can still be manipulated, but after several hours it returns to its original shape. (Scientists are looking to prolong this lifetime.)
- Materials that were once organic (such as wood) can easily be manipulated into any permanent shape.
- Because of this, people can now change their looks at will with their magic machines with the help of trained stylists to achieve their ideal look.
Discoveries are happening all the time. The list might be a little short now, but in no time more discoveries are around the bend.
To suggest a new magic be discovered, post the idea in the Chance thread to add it to the possible situations.
