This is the twenty first century.
You were born in it.
You will probably die in it.
Now you must deal with it.
The government has collapsed and given up on society irresolutely. The people, dazed and confused and hungry, resent them for it. Every last citizen has gone into hiding, afraid of the backlash if they were to venture outside the safety they have made for themselves. The rise of urban areas, unsuitable for living, has driven homelessness up everywhere. Things are dirty, and everything is scrap material; if it can even be called that. They are the lost of the world; and the government is determined to root them out of what little security they have left.
People have banded together to try and make changes, as well as just to stay alive. Some seek complete change, to overthrow what little government is left. Others look to take over the coup d'etat called the Directory, and make them work alongside their enemies to fix a country they did not harm. Those who do not affix to themselves to either creed fall by the wayside and are often victimized by propaganda, falling to any side that sways them.
There are many residents of what used to be called Washington, DC; The capitol of the decaying United States, and the heart of The Corruption.
It's 2035.
It's been ten years since the total collapse of the economy, eliminating jobs and homes along with them; a double whammy of unemployment and foreclosure. Overwhelmed by the crash of the world's most dependable economy and threats of war from countries who made investments in the US, the government throws up its arms and capitulates, turning against the people they once served. The president's final announcement still rings in peoples ears:
"The United States is too far gone. We have failed, America; and this time, there's no recovery program that can help you now. There is nothing that can save you. America, you are on your own."
And then he died.
