The campus, bathed in fresh, early afternoon light, got quite a bit congested once the assembly was over. Groups struggled to organize themselves from the massive mob of scared and excited freshmen, and it wasn’t until Group 15 managed to push themselves into a mostly-empty pathway that Izzy could actually hear any instructions from her group leader.
“Okay!” Sandra started for the dozenth time with a laugh. “Let’s try this again. For the tour we’re going to start on the other side of campus, okay? Just so we don’t tangle with too many other groups at once.” She waved a hand for them to follow her—and thanks to her model-like height, she was relatively easy to see over the mob of heads. The group seemed eager to stretch their legs and get as far away from those horrible, horrible metal chairs as possible—Izzy couldn’t blame them.
“When’s lunch? I’m starving,” Ray asked immediately before they could move more than five feet. Sandra let out another laugh, but it was easy to tell she was getting on the edge of her wits after an irritatingly long gathering.
“For us, it’s in an hour. We’ll be right by the cafeteria at that point, if all goes well.”
“Wait, before we go, can we have a bathroom break real quick?” Janet was quick to shout. Sandra pursed her lips when she glanced at her watch, but managed a tight-sounding, “Sure! Quick bathroom break for those that need it.” Janet was the only one to budge from that point. The rest of them continued to stretch, chatted empty conversations and waited impatiently.
“What’s next on the agenda?” Hannah asked over boring questions about the weather. Sandra addressed her, but spoke loud enough for everyone to hear: “The tour, lunch, finish the tour, and then in the quad some of our larger clubs and sports teams will be spieling and recruiting anyone that’s interested. After that, veggie burgers and hot dogs will be served at the mixer and Day Two is over!”
“What about Day Three?” Lucy asked. Someone was excited for this to end, not that Izzy disagreed. Sandra was prepared with a quick huff and a smile to plaster over the exhaustion.
“No set schedule. Breakfast from eight to ten, lunch from noon to three, dinner from six to eight. The rest is last-minute registration for those that had holds on their accounts, or those that want to schedule more than the standard twelve units. The book store will be open and holding some good sales for books and supplies and whatnot, too.” At the sound of that, Izzy’s stomach dropped as she thought back to the wad of cash in her sock drawer. Would it be enough…? What if she didn’t have enough cash for all the supplies she needed?
Janet returned, and even though Sandra waved at the group to continue, Izzy stole the opportunity to ask a question: “Is there an opportunity to work on-campus?”
“Oh, yeah!” Sandra said quickly, not turning around. “Of course. There will be more information on that later. Let’s get going so we keep on schedule!”
