Roleplay Rating (and general reasoning for): PG-13 (YA fiction)

Plot Description: Adalie never was one to follow the rules, so when she steals the Magical Apple on a whim, she doesn't think through the consequences. She doesn't exactly think through what she does with it once she's got it.
But it brings her and Evening together on a magical journey that neither of them could have ever expected.

Her years of training under her parents have made her quite skilled in the trade.
Personality: She likes the predictability of her life – though she only begrudgingly follows in her family’s footsteps - and doesn’t let herself expect bigger things out of life. She is often times grumpy, especially while working the booth. Despite this exterior, her biggest dream is to fall in love and find her fairy tale happy ending, and she has a soft spot for romance and magic, and is envious of the races (and rare humans) who are born with an affinity for the magical arts.

The sun shone through the trees, casting a warm glow across the land. Its golden beams filtered through the branches and created small pools of warmth, sparkling in the dew left over from the previous night.
The ancient trees were so tall their branches seemed to brush the sky. They had large, impressive trunks that were the size of two men at the least. Woodland creatures went about their day, the early risers skittering through the underbrush, gathering food and supplies for their dens. The day was still young so not many creatures had risen yet.

Adalie on the other hand, had not yet gone to sleep.

She sat perched on a high tree branch. Her favourite tree branch, to be exact. She was completely still, and a passerby may not have even noticed her or given her a second glance. Her short, lavender hair stood out the most amongst the vibrant green trees. Her golden eyes moved around, taking in her surroundings. This was her favourite perch to watch the sun rise, and she did so quite often - much to her parent’s disapproval. That only meant she had stopped telling them. She figured what they didn’t know wouldn’t hurt them. She wasn’t sure why it bothered them so much. Elves didn’t exactly need sleep, not in the same way humans or other creatures did. And this spot was one of her preferred spots to meditate and get away from it all. Get away from the stuffy elders and their olden ways. She wasn’t a child anymore, and she didn’t need their constant guidance, hovering over her shoulder.

She found herself wanting to get away from everything more and more. She had grown up in her small town, just on the outskirts of the Indagi Glades and lived there all her live. It was a beautiful, historic and ancient place. But the disadvantage of that was that everyone was so uptight, like, all the time. Sure, respect your elders, and all that, but sometimes it just got so tiring. They had been following so many of these ancient rules for all of eternity, you would think that they might be open to a little reform now and then. Maybe some fresh ideas. That was what Adalie thought, at least. But she knew that was ridiculous. Any mention of her thoughts aloud would tighten her parents reins on her even more, and that was the last thing she needed.

She sat there, at her perch, for a little longer before deciding to drag herself away and head home again. Her stomach grumbled as her feet followed the well-known path, her eyes scouring the shrubs around her for a snack. There was not much around – the animals had already taken their helpings for their breakfast. But not everything – there was still a small patch of bright red, ripe berries tucked off to the side. Her keen eyes picked them out and she grabbed a handful, popping them one by one into her mouth. Their sweet, tart juices filled her mouth and left her tongue red.

As she returned to her home, she crept nimbly around the back and climbed back into the window she had left ajar. She wasn’t sure where her parents were but she hoped that they wouldn’t notice her stealthily creep back into her room.

“Adalie?” came her mother’s voice.

Damn. No such luck.

“Adalie is that you?”

Her mom must have super hearing. How could she have known? Adalie stayed quiet, creeping over to her bed, arranging herself in a cross-legged seated position. She held her breath, counting up, as she waited, listening intently. She could hear her mother’s soft footsteps moving along the old, weathered floorboards of their home, then the quiet creak of her bedroom door as her mother opened it.

“Well good morning young lady,” she said as she entered the room.

Adalie opened her eyes and smiled brightly at her mother. She could tell her mother was unimpressed.
“Where have you been?” she asked, cutting straight to the chase. Adalie frowned. She wasn’t sure if her mom actually knew she had left, or if she was just calling her bluff. Her parents weren’t usually around at this time anyways, so she was surprised to see them home.

“Nowhere,” replied Adalie innocently, watching her mom’s expression.

Her mom frowned, crossing her arms. Adalie pursed her lips but didn’t say anything else.

“I don’t like you going out all night like that,” said her mother with a frown. “It isn’t safe, and you know that. You never know what sorts of things you could run into.”

Adalie rolled her eyes. That wasn’t even a real reason. They were so close to the Indagi Glades that the only other individuals you were likely to encounter was another elf. Their little village was far from the mountains, where the more sinister animals might live.
“I’m not a child anymore, mother,” said Adalie curtly, not moving from her perch on her cushions.

Her mother pursed her lips and crossed her arms. Keyra was slender, like her daughter, with shoulder-length pale blonde hair that framed her face. She had the same golden eyes as Adalie, and they surveyed her, disapproval and concern all mixed together into one.

“I don’t want you going out overnight like this anymore, and that’s final. We have discussed this before, and you know that while you live with us you will obey our rules. You’re lucky your father isn’t here right now or else he would be even more upset.” Keyra’s tone was strict and firm, and Adalie frowned at her mother. There was a pause, and then she softened a little. “We just want to make sure you’re safe.”

“I know, but I can take care of myself. You don’t have to worry about me,” said Adalie.

“I worry. Please don’t go out anymore,” replied her mother.

Adalie frowned. She hated lying to her mother but she also wanted to get her off her case. “Sorry mom,” she said, giving a non-answer. She had no intentions of following their rules, because she didn’t see the need. And she really needed her space. She wasn’t cut out for that kind of structure.

She really wasn’t cut out to be an elf.

The wispy fingers of the sun crept over the horizon, backlighting the bones of scrawny trees and grassy hillsides. Evening Hyalus, however, was already awake – along with most of the merchants on the little port town of Cabbageroot. Despite her name, Evening was more of a morning person than anything else. She thrived in the beginning hours of the day, before the roosters crowed and the dew on the grass had settled.

Today was no different. Evening – or Evie, as she often went by – had already been hard at work finishing her latest creation for some time before the morning star had even thought about making it’s ascent into the sky.

The Hyalus family were renowned in their small town for their small shop in the market; they specialized in hand-blown glass creations, from practical vases and containers, to the more artistic trinkets and sculptures. Evie’s mother enjoyed making oil lamps of all sizes, her father was skilled in crafting bowls and pottery, and, though he was still too young to have chosen a specialty, her younger brother was showing great promise as a glass-blower. And Evie? She loved the beauty of the process. Watching the glass go from cold and hard to effervescent and malleable; morphing pieces from lifeless forms and giving them vitality; creating something unexpected for the travelers making port in Cabbageroot before the next stop on their journey; listening to mothers and fathers say what a lovely thing to bring home to my family; hearing how absolutely exquisite a sailor found a trinket she made, and how it would look lovely around the next of his or her lover; giggling as others still cooed about how jealous their neighbor would be when they saw what they had brought home.

This time, however, Evening was quite confident that she had absolutely outdone herself. She leaned back in her wooden chair and gazed at her newest piece of work, brushing bits of hair from her face and she finally let herself exhale. She felt as though she’d been holding her breathe for the last hour as she perfected her design. A hand on her shoulder caused Evie to look behind her.

“They look lovely, Evie dear,” her mother said. Evie’s lips curled into a subtle, proud smile.
“Thanks, Ma,” Evie responded.
“Your father and I are about to head out for the day. He and Dayton are almost done getting the shop set up for the day.”

Evie nodded. She was excited for a chance to tend the shop on her own. She wanted to prove that she could handle more responsibilities with the family business. With both her parents and her brother gone for the day as they went to get goods from the town over, the pressure was on. But Evie was certain she could handle it.

Her father suddenly appeared in the doorway of the workshop.
“Morning, my lovely family,” he said with a warm smile. He took a step inside and marveled at the beautiful glasswork on the table. “Evie, dear, these are breathtaking.”
“I can’t wait to put them out,” Evie said, excitement bubbling inside her.
“Have you tested them? I don’t doubt your skill, but you are sure they will hold safely?” her father asked. Evie nodded. She took the glass shoes off the table and slid them on to her feet, then stood and gave a twirl.
“Well I’ll be,” her father murmured. “I’ve never seen anything like it. Can you imagine, Wilhelmina? Our daughter, maker of the finest glass slippers in all the land.”

Evening’s mother had satisfaction beaming from the bright blues of her eyes. “Not just the finest, Jacob, but the first. These are absolutely one of a kind. Be sure you know their worth, my love.”
“Don’t settle for the first offer,” Jacob agreed. “These are truly special. The intricate detailing on these, why, I’m simply blown away.”

It was true; not only were the shows a truly marvelous innovation, it was evident that great precision was taken to inscribe the ornate designs that swirled and danced along the sides of the shoes and around the sturdy raised heels.
“Moooom! Daaaaad! Let’s go!” Dayton came running in. Evie’s little brother was a firecracker, always shooting from one place to the next. Evie wouldn’t be surprised if one day he found himself running right off the ground and into the sky. Her parents each came over and kissed her on the head.

“The sun is almost up,” noted Jacob. “The market is going to be busy today. I noticed a lot of new ships docked at the marina. Don’t be late to open.”
“We’ll be home late tonight,” added Wilhemina.
“Of course, papa. I’ve got it, don’t worry,” Evening assured.
“See ya, Evie!” Dayton called, already halfway down the hall. With a final wave, her parents disappeared from the room. With a delicate cautiousness, Evie tucked the slippers into a dark blue velvet pouch.

After a quick breakfast of milk, cheese, and stale bread, Evie ventured downstairs and made her way to the store – a small shanty off to the side of the family home that served as the backroom for merchandise storage, and a tent-covered stall in front of it where the goods that were on sale were displayed. There was a tall fence surrounding the property. She unlocked the gate with her spare key. True to their word, her father and brother had finished setting up for the day. She glanced around for a spot to put her shoes. She noticed a pedestal in the center of the shop with a cushion trimmed with gold thread placed on top. She smiled knowingly and made a mental note to thank her father when he returned.

Gingerly, she took out her prized creation and placed the shoes atop the cushion. The light from the sun poured onto the glass-work - glimmering in fractals, like tiny dancers trapped inside the shoes.

Today was going to be like no other day she had experienced before. She could just feel it.
