Ideas and itchings.

So, it's what feel like super late on a Thursday night so the chances are I have placed this in the wrong area of the forum so please do forgive me, or feel free to tell me to move my ass to the right destination.

I've had severe itchings to get back into writing for such a long time, but have put it off because I have sadly been without laptop for over a year now sobbing so hard. I recently thought well sod that and bought a notepad so I can write (because writing is fun, too!) and finally get back into the groove, and so I came up with an idea. It's incredibly rough around the edges, there is so far no plot, no title, no characters, only a general idea and theme.
I need advice on it and I thought who better to come to, than my lovely guys and gals on Wander!

I would like to step out of my comfort zone and write some sort of adventure/fantasy creation, but also in third person because I write in first person way too much. My idea is gonna be seriously rough and you're gonna lose the will to live even reading it so it's okay if you give up and throw your arms in the air as you run away.

My idea is thus: in <insert elegant name here> the royals and their whole Kingdom are in trouble for x reason, and decide to send their daughter, the princess, on a secret mission, given only a small number of days in each door (bear with me, I'll explain this in a second) to find a way to solve problem X. Princess has always been unusually talented in <insert talent here (probably archery, I have a soft spot)> which helps in her escapades.
There will be an area/place where there are a set of doors (number I am unsure of yet), each of which lead to a different place. In each places maybe she could collect something and bring it back? idk how it's going to work yet but I'm determined to make this keep your interest. In each door, she unintentionally discovers one small secret or back hand deals/affairs that her family have dealt, and what they have never told her before.
She must make the decision to complete her task and save the whole Kingdom, under the price of <insert something here (her freedom?)>, or whether she will decide to stay in one of the doors that were first presented to her.

Oh god I know it's so rough and there are so many possibilities I'll be surprised if you're not all tearing your hair out. Any, any advice/critique/suggestions would be welcomed with crazed Holly hugs and kisses.

Hey Holly! So while this idea sounds really cool (what's gonna be behind those doors?), this is unfortunately not the right area. This is where the Writer's Block Members meet every week to critique fellow Workshop Group member's writing.

I think the area you are looking for is probably here in the Quills and Ink area under novel ideas. In that section of the forum you can post your own work to be critiqued, and all Wanderers can give you tips and techniques. Also in that same sub-board members are free to talk about works that they admire. So in the novels topic I could wax poetic about The Catcher in the Rye, or J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Same situation for the short stories and poetry section, as well as the painting, graphic design, ect. in the Pixels and Paint board. In the general sections of those you can post overall tips and techniques in relation to art and writing.

Sorry if that's a bit confusing! The reason that we keep the Critique Group board unlocked is that some members like to look at the prompts, and lessons without wanting to submit their own work, which Mikkay and I feel is more than fine. However, if you feel that you posting in the workshop area was some kind of fate, and that you would really like to be in the workshops, then please feel free to sign up here!

I really like it as well :) I think that aside from the things Mikkay brought up, it'd be a really interesting read, although I don't think I could offer much criticism without having more details.

I had a feeling it wasn't in the right place. I was super tired and just sort of went I don't know things and posted somewhere with the words writing idk I'm terrible when I'm tired everything just flies over my head. Apologies for putting it in the wrong place, and thank you for moving it *squishes*

You most certainly have given me pointers, Mikkay, I hadn't thought about some of that. I'm trying to refine it as we speak, slowly working my way onto the details.
As for the doors, I was thinking them to be like those from The Nightmare Before Christmas? Each door will lead into a different world if you will, within each door is a different state (forgive me I can't think of the damn word) of the Royal's Kingdom, and it's essentially their passage into getting to the great areas they have conquered. I'm not entirely 100% on this idea as of yet because I"m not sure it's plausible?

I was thinking perhaps the princess decides it's because they have utter trust in her and no one else to do the job, but she later begins to wonder why the did send her, after all the Kingdom has some of the greatest warriors/knights in the known world. Perhaps they sent her elder brother who (she later finds this out maybe) never returned.
It's so rough at the moment oh my god I'm sorry. I'm going to keep refining it until there is something with more of a backbone to it and more detail, like Maddie said.

I really like the doors idea. It is fantasy, so you can have anything happen. You can explain how this technology is possible for them, though. Is it something they created with magic, or is it a natural phenomenon that they just built around...it can be whatever you want. And there are so many stories that allow people to transport between worlds (Narnia, His Darkness Materials, the example you gave) so it's all good.

I do wonder though, these 'states'. Can people only reach them through the doors, or is it possible for them to travel by foot or horse or whatever - it's just slower to do so? Or is it like they are separate realms?

I kind of feel like if her elder brother hadn't returned, she would know about it. I know you're just throwing out ideas, though. Could it be related to the doors that means she is one of the few who can actually go?

Okay, good. I feel a little better about the doors and I did a brief sketch and background thing on them so I feel maybe 70% about the doors now.

I was thinking this about this, but I think it depends on what I decide for the plot. I think though that they probably won't be reachable unless one walks through the door on either of the sides. I need to pin down a number for the doors, but I was thinking maybe each door could lead to a different place in one realm/world/state in which case there could be any number of doors, some known some not, or that there would be a smaller amount of doors and they would lead to different realms/worlds/states entirely.

I agree with you on that, Mollianne, and I think I'm scraping that idea. I don't think I have the level of commitment or surety for something like that. Thank you for your help omg you've really helped a lot *hugs*

This is just an idea, but perhaps to ensure that other people didn't escape the lands like criminals and stuff, the doors were created so that they could only be travelled through with someone of royal blood? So armies could go through as long as they're escorted by someone royal, but on a quest like this it seemed pointless to merely have the princess escort a knight when she could probably do it herself. This could explain the need for the princess to go, but idk. That was just the first conclusion I came to upon reading the prompt.
