Jumping in here late, but I just couldn't resist! I've skimmed through the whole thread and it's so interesting to see how passionate people have got about this book and it's themes.
I've read the first two books out of plain curiosity. It took me two months to finish the pair, but since I spent my hard-earned money on them I was damn well going to drag myself through them! It was tedious. The writing is bland and uninspired. It's achingly repetitive and dull. At first I thought the second book was going to be better than the first, but it wasn't. I didn't wholly enjoy them, but I wanted my opinion on them to be educated (yes, I'm that person).
I won't be the reading the third book as I am simply not interested. Even if you do read these books for the smut (not that I was!), it soon gets dry and repetitive. Very early on in the series I started wanting to stab Ana in the eye every time she said "Oh my".
And don't even get me started on her bloody 'subconscious' and 'inner goddess'. The most clunky and irritating literary devices ever.
However, short of that, I have no strong feelings towards this book. Sure, it irritates me that E.L.James is making so much money from this badly-edited dross, however that aside I'm quite happy to put the books down, move on with my life and not give it a second thought. People will always read and enjoy trash, just as they will always listen to terrible music and eat junk food. It's not my place to judge.
If you're looking for a giggle and a very witty breakdown of the story, check out this blogger's series, aptly named "Fifty Shades of Tedious Fuckery". Every installment makes me snort unattractively with laughter, without fail.
