If you're new to a Proboards Forum, this might be a little overwhelming for you. That's okay! It can get a little confusing at times. This basic tutorial will hopefully catch you up on the lingo that is used around forums and keep you up-to-date with the basic code that is used in regular responses.
Vocabulary
What is a "category"?
A category is just as it sounds. It's a little section on the homepage that holds a certain group of "boards" to keep organization. Here at Wander, our categories include The Welcome Mat, The Chatterbox, The Showroom and League of Extraordinary Brilliance.
What is a "board"?
A board is a container for "threads" that all follow similar topics. For example, the board Wandering Arrivals is where people go to post their introductions and get to know each other. This is also for organizational purposes.
What is a "thread"?
A thread is a topic of conversation inside a board, made up of little "posts." This is a thread that you're reading right now: a topic of conversation that people can reply to.
What is a "post"?
A post is a person's response in a thread. You'll notice that people's responses to this and other threads are divided by a thin line so you know someone else is speaking. Each individual response is referred to as a "post."
Basic Codes
Here, on Proboards forums, BBC is the type of coding that is used. It's a lot like HTML, minus a few characters. In forums, coding is usually referred to for ways to make your text look pretty, or insert images into responses and so forth. When you hit "reply" on the bottom of a thread, you're brought into a window that does the codes for you so you don't have to remember them. For example, when you highlight a word that you wrote and press that B square, it bolds your font for you, and so forth. There are also smilies to add to your posts.
Hovering over these little squares gives you a basic, one-word description of what it is. For example, a red A says Font Face, where it places a code that looks like this:
(*Note: codes only show up when they are incorrectly put, or if they are inside a code box, which shows up as a C inside a box in the series of codes.)
You may edit it to say Ariel, Times New Roman and so forth instead of Verdana and this will edit your work.
Please notice how when you put in these codes, it doesn't make any immediate changes to your text. You'll see the codes, themselves, until you publish your post. You may preview your post to see if you did everything right.
These codes also work in the Quick Reply box below; however, you must put in these codes by hand. (They're easy to remember after a while.)
